Decision-maker

A person who can hire you or send you work, such as a partner, a head of legal or a client. Decision-makers have the power but not the time. Write to one as you would to a friend: thanks for a real thing, one question, and no reminder. Chapter 5 · see Peer, Cohort

Explained in Chapter 5, Peers, Not Decision-Makers, of The Lawyer's Personal Brand.

How it comes up, in Chapter 5
Networking means keeping in touch with people on purpose. Most juniors aim it upward, at decision-makers: the people who can hire you or send you work. In a law firm, those are the partners. But the people with the power are the people without the time. Your peers (lawyers at roughly your stage) have the time. In ten years some of them will be the decision-makers.
