Module 2 · Chapter 6
Teach It to the Cat
A short talk to your team is the quickest way to understand a point and be known for it. Build it from three points, one story and one ask, then write it up.
In this chapter
- How to build a ten-minute talk from three points, one story and one ask
- How to state a rule that is still changing, so it stays true
- How to turn the talk into a post, and how to take a public correction
6.1Explaining is how you learn
The fastest way to understand a point is to explain it to someone. The fastest way to avoid that is to say you are not ready. Juniors say it for years, and it is true every time, because nobody is ready before the first try.
Key point
A ten-minute talk has a shape: three points, one story, one ask. Ten minutes holds all three and has no room for a fourth.
Also in this chapter
- Say yes before you feel ready
- State a moving rule with the hedge inside it
- Rehearse on someone who is not a lawyer
- A story and an ask make the talk last
- A post is the talk for strangers
- How to be corrected in public
- Your job
